Deploying or recomposing a linked clone in VMware View Manager results in the error: View Composer agent initialization state error (6): Unknown failure (waited 0 seconds) (1011653)

  • After deploying or recomposing a linked clone desktop, the VMware View Administrator reports the error:
    View Composer agent initialization state error (6): Unknown failure (waited 0 seconds)
  • Shortly after the preceding error is reported, View Administrator displays your virtual machine in a Ready state.


When provisioning a linked clone, View Composer changes the computer name and initiates a reboot so that the computer name takes effect. View Composer stops the View Composer service during the reboot process. In some cases, Windows restarts the View Composer service. Because the system is being shut down for the reboot, the View Composer service fails and reports the failure with status code 6, an unexpected error.
After the reboot, the rest of the process completes successfully and the status is set to 0 (indicating success). However, by that time the View Agent has detected the status code 6 and reports it back to the View Server, resulting in the error even though the desktop is functional.
This error can be safely ignored and can be removed by rebooting the machine.
If multiple virtual machines cannot be rebooted, use an alternative script that reboots the virtual machines as part of provisioning.
In a text editor, save these lines as a .bat file:
#This script is to restart the machine
echo Restarting this virtual machine
shutdown -r -t 01
Save this batch file on the parent virtual machine (C:\WINDOWS\system32) and provide this path in the Post synchronization script field (on the QuickPrep Setting screen) in the Add Pool wizard.
