VMware Data Recovery fails to connect to vCenter Server with the error: Connect::BeginSession: failed to authenticate (1010578)

  • 15 Ratings

  • VMware Data Recovery (VDR)  fails to connect to vCenter Server
  • When trying to connect the VDR appliance to vCenter Server, after populating the vCenter Server Credentials window, the connection fails
  • You see the error:

    Connect::BeginSession: failed to authenticate
Please make sure that the DataRecovery Appliance is turned on

This issue may occur if you have implemented a VDR role to do your backups.

If you can connect to the appliance with administrator privileges, then this is most likely a permissions issue.
You require these privileges to manage the VDR appliance:
  • Datastore > Allocate space
  • VirtualMachine > Configuration > Add new disk
  • VirtualMachine > Configuration > Add existing disk

Note: The Add existing disk privilege is required if Hot-Add feature is enabled (currently included with the vSphere Advanced, Enterprise, and Enterprise Plus licenses).

  • VirtualMachine > Configuration > Change resource
  • VirtualMachine > Configuration > Remove disk
  • VirtualMachine > Configuration > Settings
  • Global > Licenses
These privileges can be applied at the host or appliance object, except Global > Licenses. This privilege must be applied at the top most level of your vCenter Server hierarchy.

If applying all of these privileges at the top-most level is an issue, then you can define two separate roles: one role that contains the Global > License privilege, and another that contains all the other privileges.

You can then create two permissions for your user, one at the top-most level, and the other at the host or appliance level.

This allows you to successfully connect to your VDR appliance with the custom role.

Additional Information

To back up virtual machines, users require these additional privileges:
  • VirtualMachine > Configuration > Disk change tracking
  • VirtualMachine > Provisioning > Allow read-only disk access
  • VirtualMachine > Provisioning > Allow VM download
  • VirtualMachine > State > Create snapshot
  • VirtualMachine > State > Remove snapshot
