Booting from Dell Recovery CD fails when an external USB device is connected (1004494)

  • 1 Ratings

Some Dell servers running ESX fail to boot from a Dell Recovery CD if an external USB device is connected during startup. The recovery process fails, reporting that more than one USB device is connected.

The problem is that the Dell Remote Access Card 5 (DRAC5) appears to the system as two devices, including a USB device. This issue does not happen with DRAC4.
To resolve this issue:
  1. Disconnect any external USB devices, including DRAC remote media, before using the Dell Recovery CD.
  2. In DRAC 5, add virtual floppy to the list of devices to ignore.
Note: This issue is resolved in ESX 3.5 Update 2.
