Authentication from IBM Director Server Console to Director Agent Fails With the "Target System Is Not Currently Available" Error (1003123)

After the IBM Director agent and server installation, the hostname/IP address of the agent is added to the IBM Director console. This step succeeds, and an entry with the agent name appears in the console.
At this point, there is a lock beside the entry, indicating that access to this agent is restricted and you need to log in to this machine. After double-clicking the lock, you can enter your user name and password. However, this authentication fails with the Target System is not currently available error message.


To fix this problem, follow these steps:
  1. Open the /etc/pam.d/ibmdir configuration file.
  2. Comment out all the existing lines and insert the following lines:
    auth required service=system-auth
    auth required /lib/security/
    account required service=system-auth
