Moving vSAN from one vCenter to an another vCenter (2151610)

  • 2 Ratings

Assistance moving vSAN from an old vCenter to a new one when there are custom vSAN storage policies configured.

To perform live migration, Follow the below steps:

  1. Build a new vCenter Server.
  2. Ensure that networking is configured correctly on a new vCenter Server.
  3. If you are using vDS(vSphere Distributed Switch), you can either export the vDS and import it into the new cluster, or create the vDS manually and configure hosts on it once they are added to the new cluster.
  4. Create a new Cluster, enable vSAN, and set disk claim to manual.
  5. Create vSAN storage Policies to match vSAN policies from old cluster. Ensure that rule-sets are designed in the exact order as the original. (ensuring no major resync will occur when VM adopts new policy in new cluster)
  6. Disconnect all the hosts from inventory.
  7. Remove the hosts from inventory.
  8. Add hosts to the new vSAN enabled cluster.
  9. Verify host and VM connectivity.
  10. If vDS configure hosts to use it now one at a time.
  11. Adopt the vSAN storage policy on VMs.
  12. Edit VM policy and assign the Policy that matches the VMs policy that it migrated with the VM.
  13. Do this once and check for resync to ensure that the VM does not start a full resync. If no major resync then the policy was copied correctly and move to next VM and adopt new policy for VM.

Note: The Idea is to move gradually initially to prevent creating a major resync in the cluster.

  14. Rinse and repeat until all the VMs have been made compliant with the new vSAN clusters Storage Policies.

Note: If done correctly, there will be no resync. If the VMs start resyncing then there is an inconsistency in the rule-set from the original to the new storage Policies.
