Configure a supported desktop environment for Horizon 7 version 7.3 Linux desktops on Ubuntu 14.04 and Ubuntu 16.04 (2151294)

You can configure one of the desktop environments supported by Horizon 7 version 7.3 for Linux desktops to be the default one used on Ubuntu 14.04 and Ubuntu 16.04 virtual machines.

Solution

For Horizon 7 version 7.3.0 or later for Linux desktops, GNOME, KDE, and MATE desktop environments are supported on both Ubuntu 14.04 and Ubuntu 16.04 virtual machines. Use the instructions below to set the default desktop environment of your choice. 


GNOME for Ubuntu 14.04 / 16.04:
  1. Run one of the following commands:
    • For Ubuntu 14.04: sudo apt-get install gnome-session-fallback
    • For Ubuntu 16.04: sudo apt install gnome-session-flashback
  2. Restart the virtual machine.
  3. On the login screen, select the "GNOME Flashback (Metacity)" option.

KDE for Ubuntu 14.04 / 16.04
  1. Run the following command: sudo apt install plasma-desktop
  2. Restart the virtual machine.
  3. On the login screen, select the "Plasma" option for Ubuntu 16.04 and "KDE Plasma Workspace" option for Ubuntu 14.04.

MATE for Ubuntu 14.04 / 16.04
  1. Install MATE using one of the following set of commands:
    •  Install MATE 1.8 for Ubuntu 14.04:
          sudo apt-add-repository ppa:ubuntu-mate-dev/ppa   sudo apt-add-repository ppa:ubuntu-mate-dev/trusty-mate
          sudo apt-get update 
        sudo apt-get upgrade
        sudo apt-get install mate

    •  Install MATE 1.6 for Ubuntu 16.04:
        sudo apt-add-repository ppa:ubuntu-mate-dev/xenial-mate
        sudo apt update 
       sudo apt upgrade
       sudo apt install mate ubuntu-mate-themes

  2. Restart the virtual machine.
  3. On the login screen, select the "MATE" option.

If you are using SSO, you can set the "SSODesktopType" option in the /etc/vmware/viewagent-custom.conf file.
