Symptoms

  • Upgrading vCenter Server Appliance 5.5 to 6.0 that has been changed to a static host name from a DHCP hostname fails.
  • You see the error:

    Firstboot script execution error

Cause

This issue is caused by vCenter Server Appliance certificates not being updated after the hostname has changed from a DHCP provided name, to a static hostname. The upgrade of the vCenter Server Appliance from 5.5 to 6.0 fails on the mismatched certificates during the firstboot run.

Resolution

To resolve this issue, regenerate the certificates before performing the upgrade.

To regenerate the certificate:
  1. Log in to the vCenter Server Appliance 5.5 management interface (VAMI) using root credentials at:

    https://hostname:5480/

  2. Click the Admin tab.
  3. Select Certificate regeneration enabled.
  4. Click Submit.
  5. Reboot the vCenter Server Appliance.
