"Hard disk x' ExternalDiskID:"xx"vm: 'xx-dvsa ' does not have or lost its storage” error vRealize Automation (2101169)

  • vRealize Automation Center (formerly known as vCloud Automation Center) reports an error similar to:

    Hard disk 3' ExternalDiskID:"xx"vm: 'xx-dvsa ' does not have or lost its storage”

  • Either the virtual machine was deleted, but vRealize Automation Center still sees it as missing or the virtual machines are in the local data store and are not managed by vRealize Automation Center.
  • In the Install Dir\Server\Logs\All.log file, you see entries similar to:

Disk name:'Hard disk 3' ExternalDiskID:'6000C29a-864b-4a19-c678-a2e476606445', vm:'VM_NAME' does not have or lost its storage. This may have been caused by a storage being moved. Disk name:'Hard disk 1' ExternalDiskID:'6000C291-ece3-e925-1062-1b8433493577'
  • In the Install Dir\Server\Logs\All.log file, reports errors similar to:

    DC: 843cf246-8daa-400b-adbf-a2c6382a74a1: inventory: XXXXXXXXXX: vCloud02: Error processing data collection response, StatusID = f5bb593a-da37-41cf-a401-5ed54f186c96, exception: Object reference not set to an instance of an object. 
Note: The preceding log excerpts are only examples. Date, time, and environmental variables may vary depending on your environment.


This issue occurs when managed machine hard disks are removed, migrated to storage not managed by vRealize Automation, or are otherwise unreachable by vRealize Automation.


This issue is resolved in vRealize Automation 6.2.5, available at VMware Downloads.
Currently, there is no resolution or workaround.
