Purpose

Starting with vSphere 5.5, VMware discontinues support for some of the processors.
 
This article provides a list of processors that are no longer supported by VMware.

Details

In vSphere 5.5, VMware discontinues support for all processors launched in 2005 and earlier. In consultation with the CPU vendors and our partners, VMware believes the impact of discontinuing support for these processors is negligible to none.
 
vSphere 5.5 and later do not support these processors:
  • AMD
    • AMD Opteron 1xx Rev-E (Single Core) Series
    • AMD Opteron 1xx Rev-E (Dual-Core) Series
    • AMD Opteron 2xx Rev-E (Single Core) Series
    • AMD Opteron 2xx Rev-E (Dual Core) Series
    • AMD Opteron 8xx Rev-E (Single Core) Series
    • AMD Opteron 8xx Rev-E (Dual Core) Series

  • INTEL
    • Intel Dual-Core Xeon DP (Paxville) Series
    • Intel Xeon 50xx Series
    • Intel Xeon 70xx Series
    • Intel Xeon 71xx Series

Q: Has VMware discontinued processors in the past?
 
A: Yes. In ESX/ESXi 4.0, VMware had dropped support for processors that lacked 64-bit instruction capabilities. In ESXi 5.0, support for processors with 64-bit capability that lacked LAHF/SAHF instructions in 64-bit mode was discontinued.

Q: Can vSphere still run on discontinued processors?

A: You may be able to successfully install and run vSphere on discontinued processors, but VMware neither lists nor supports these processors.
