  • 14 Ratings

Purpose

This article provides information on the default location of VMware Data Recovery (VDR) log files.

For information on collecting logs, see Collecting diagnostic information for VMware Data Recovery (1012282).

Resolution

VMware Data Recovery logs are grouped according to the level of detail provided, and the corresponding component:

  • Operations Logs provide an overview of VMware Data Recovery operations.
  • Verbose Data Recovery Logs provide extensive troubleshooting information regarding backup operations, deduplication, snapshot and hot-add tasks.
  • Client Connection Logs provide information regarding connectivity between the vSphere Client Plug-in and the Backup Appliance.

Accessing logs using the vSphere Client and the Data Recovery Client Plug-in

For more information regarding review of logs from the VMware Data Recovery appliance, see the Troubleshooting VMware Data Recovery section of the VMware Data Recovery Administration Guide.

An overview of VMware Data Recovery operations can be reviewed using the vSphere Client:
  1. In the vSphere Client, click Home > Solutions and Applications > VMware Data Recovery.
  2. Enter the virtual machine name or IP address of the VMware Data Recovery backup appliance and click Connect.
  3. Click the Configuration tab.
  4. Click the Log link.
  5. The VDR operations log is displayed.

Verbose troubleshooting information can be reviewed using the vSphere Client:

  1. In the vSphere Client, select Home > Solutions and Applications > VMware Data Recovery.
  2. Enter the virtual machine name or IP address of the VMware Data Recovery backup appliance and click Connect.
  3. Click the Configuration tab.
  4. Hold down the Shift key, and click the Log link. The Verbose log interface appears.
  5. Click Client Log, Appliance Operations Log, or Appliance Assert Log tab on the right-side pane to view the corresponding logs.

Note:  To modify the logging level, hold down the Shift key and click Refresh Log in the top-right corner. The Logging Level control appears. Click the up or down arrow to modify the default settings.

Client Connection logs for the current vSphere Client session can be reviewed without connecting to the VMware Data Recovery backup appliance:

  1. In the vSphere Client, select Home > Solutions and Applications > VMware Data Recovery.
  2. Click the IP address text field.
  3. Enter the keystroke series: Ctrl-Alt-g-g.
  4. The VDR Client Plug-in connection logs are displayed.

Accessing logs using the command line in the Data Recovery appliance

If the vSphere Client of Data Recovery Client plug-in is not working or unable to connect to the Data Recovery appliance, logs can be reviewed directly on the console in the VDR appliance.

For more information on logging in to the console of the VDR appliance, see the Power On the Backup Appliance section of the VMware Data Recovery Administration Guide.

An overview of VMware Data Recovery operations is stored in the log file:

  • /var/vmware/datarecovery/operations_log.utx

Note: The operations log file is stored in UTF16 format. To review this log file on the console, use a command similar to:

    iconv -f utf16 -t utf8 /var/vmware/datarecovery/operations_log.utx | less

Verbose troubleshooting information is stored in four log files:

  • Data Recovery backup engine: /var/vmware/datarecovery/datarecovery-[0-9].log
  • Deduplication operations: /var/vmware/datarecovery/chunkDedupe-[0-9].log
  • Snapshot and hot-add operations: /var/vmware/datarecovery/vcbAPI-[0-9].log
  • Data Recovery backup engine failures: /var/vmware/datarecovery/assert_log.utx

Note: The assert log file is stored in UTF16 format. To review this log file on the console, use a command similar to:

    iconv -f utf16 -t utf8 /var/vmware/datarecovery/assert_log.utx | less
