A Microsoft Windows kernel bug causes the Windows system to fail often issuing the error STOP 0x50 (1016460)

  • 0 Ratings

This issue can affect Windows virtual machines on ESX/ESXi in various situations. However, certain circumstances are more likely to cause this behavior. For example, the issue typically occurs when terminal services sessions are running, either Windows or Citrix. Furthermore, the issue is very common on Windows 2003 32-bit guests which are Physical Address Extension (PAE) enabled and are configured with more than 4G of memory. When the Windows system fails, this stop error is often issued:
STOP error 50

Microsoft has released a hotfix for this issue. For more information, see the Microsoft Knowledge Base article 978243.

If you cannot install the hotfix, the configuration options in this section are a virtualization layer workaround. These configuration steps reduce and perhaps eliminate the possibility that the Windows system will fail due to this issue. Configure these options as a precaution.

Set the appropriate options in the configuration file to true. You can edit the configuration file for a single virtual machine or for all the virtual machines running on the host,  such as with /etc/vmware/config. These settings serve as an example:
  • ESX 3.x:
    monitor_control.disable_eagervalidate = TRUE

  • ESX 4.x:
    • monitor_control.disable_eagervalidate_wide = TRUE
      If the virtual machine has been configured with more than one processor, then the additional configuration option that follows is required.
    • monitor_control.disable_patchseteagervalidate = TRUE (Required only for mulitprocessor virtual machines, also known as SMP virtual machines)
