vCenter Server installation fails with the error: Setup located a vCenter Server database but not the companion SSL certificates (1014314)

  • 22 Ratings

Symptoms

  • Installing vCenter Server on Windows Server 2003 or Windows Server 2008 fails when you are using an existing VirtualCenter 2.5, vCenter Server 4.x or vCenter Server 5.x database.
  • You see this error:

Setup located a vCenter Server database but not the companion SSL certificates.
The SSL certificates should be located in the folder: C:\ProgramData\VMware\VMware VirtualCenter\SSL\
Restore the SSL folder from the previous installation to the proper location before continuing or hosts will be disconnected and the vCenter Server upgrade will fail.

Resolution

This issue occurs when the SSL certificates are lost.

To resolve this issue:

  • If you have access to the previous VirtualCenter 2.5, vCenter Server 4.x or vCenter Server 5.x:

    1. Copy all the files located in C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\VMware\VMware Virtual Center\SSL\ to the server where vCenter Server is being installed. The destination directory varies depending on the operating system:

      • Windows Server 2003 – C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\VMware\VMware Virtual Center\SSL\
      • Windows Server 2008 – C:\ProgramData\VMware\VMware VirtualCenter\SSL\
      • Windows Server 2008R2 – C:\Programdata\VMware\VMware VirtualCenter\SSL.

Note: This directory may need to be created.

    2. After the files have been copied to the correct directory, continue the installation wizard.

  • If the previous VirtualCenter 2.5, vCenter Server 4.x or vCenter Server 5.x is inaccessible:

    1. Perform a fresh installation of VirtualCenter 2.5, vCenter Server 4.x or vCenter Server 5.x.
    2. Copy the SSL certificates.
