Issue/Introduction

Symptoms:
  • VCSA deploy cannot start Stage 2 with "The installer is unable to connect to the vCenter Appliance Management Interface."
  • At the end of stage 1 the installer shows below message "The installer is unable to connect to the vCenter Appliance Management interface"
  • On ESXi Host (where the VCSA VM is deployed), you may see similar entries:
/var/run/log/vmkernel.log
20xx-xx-xxTxx:xx:xx.xxxZ cpu85:41077519)NetPort: 1660: enabled port 0x2000077 with mac 00:50:56:a0:b2:72
20xx-xx-xxTxx:xx:xx.xxxZ cpu85:41077519)etherswitch: L2Sec_EnforcePortCompliance:172: client testvm01 requested mac address change to 00:50:56:a0:b2:72 on port 0x2000077, disallowed by vswitch policy
20xx-xx-xxTxx:xx:xx.xxxZ cpu85:41077519)etherswitch: L2Sec_EnforcePortCompliance:252: client testvm01 has policy violations on port 0x2000077. Port is blocked

20xx-xx-xxTxx:xx:xx.xxxZ cpu88:41077516)NetPort: 1879: disabled port 0x2000077

20xx-xx-xxTxx:xx:xx.xxxZ cpu52:65778)Net: 3740: disconnected client from port 0x2000077
  • New vCenter Server is hosted on ESXi Host managed by another running vCenter Server.

Environment

VMware vCenter Server 7.0.x

Cause

  1. Newly deployed VCSA has mac address provide by ESXi Host.
  2. After vCenter Deployment completes stage 1, vCenter Server reboots which is deployment stage 2 start.
  3. Due to host-sync timing, sometimes newly deployed VCSA mac address changes.
  4. On stage 2, VCSA cannot connect to network because mac address was changed.

Resolution

This is expected behavior.

Workaround:
To work around this issue, please apply one of the below (not both of them):
  1. Deploy VCSA target server set as the vCenter Server managing the ESXi Host (not the ESXi Host).
  2. Set "reject mac address change" to "Accept" on the vSwitch the VCSA Virtual Machine is connected. For more information, see MAC Address Changes .
