Issue/Introduction

This article provides information to resolve and work around issues with editing and adding a serial port using a named pipe, network or physical device on a virtual machine.

Symptoms:
  • You cannot Add or Edit a serial port that uses a named pipe, network or physical device from the virtual machine (VM) Edit Settings dialog, the OK button remains greyed out.
  • For VMs with an existing serial port device that uses named pipe, network or physical serial port the OK button in VM Edit Settings dialog might remain greyed out and prevent modifications to the VM configuration.

Environment

VMware vCenter Server 7.0.x

Resolution

This issue is resolved in VMware vCenter Server vCenter Server 7.0 Update 2c (build number 18356314).

Workaround:
To workaround this issue:
  1. In the VM Edit Settings dialog configure the serial port device to use output file.
  2. Provide the needed details for the output file.
  3. Switch to the desired serial port type.
  4. Provide the needed serial port details.
  5. Click OK to save the changes.
Note: That adding a serial port requires the VM to be powered-off and modifying an existing serial port can be done on a powered-off, or powered-on VM.
