Issue/Introduction

Symptoms:
In the witness VM of vSAN 7.0, you experience this symptom:

High CPU utilization is observed.

Environment

VMware vSphere ESXi 7.0.0

Cause

The Dying Disk Handling (DDH) feature in vSAN continuously monitors the health of disks/diskgroups in order to detect an impending disk/diskgroup failure or a poorly performing diskgroup. For more information, see Dying Disk Handling (DDH) in vSAN 6.6 (2148358).

The daemon vsandevicemonitord runs periodically and checks the state of the disk/diskgroup. In witness VM, this daemon runs continuously without sleep causing the high CPU usage.

Resolution

Upgraded vCenter/ESXi to 7.0U1 or higher

Workaround:
To work around this issue, stop the daemon in the witness VM by running this command:

/etc/init.d/vsandevicemonitord stop
