Issue/Introduction

Symptoms:
  • In NSX-T versions prior to 2.5.1, backups are configured, but never complete, cluster back shows "Cluster Backup in Progress".
  • If the manager is restarted, the backup is stopped and on the next scheduled backup, it will start again and never complete, with same status "Cluster Backup in Progress".
  • On demand back will also start and never complete, with the same status "Cluster Backup in Progress".
  • The "Cluster Backups" section shows "Status Failed", with the error message "backup operation unknown error".
  • Below is a screenshot of the status and on screen:
  • On the NSX-T manager which is the VIP leader, you should see the following errors in this log:
/var/log/nvpapi/api_server.log
  • Here we can see the start of the password prompt for the SFTP backup user, in this case "nsxadmin" with only "pass"
[email protected]'s pass
  • In the next few lines you should see the second part of the password request "word":
2020-04-23T12:00:10.783Z napi.root.node.file-store.utils ERROR Unexpected ssh output: word:

Environment

VMware NSX-T Data Center

Cause

Before NSX-T 2.5.1, the backup process was unable to correctly parse the returned MOTD bannerĀ and password prompt for the SFTP backup user.
This causes the backup process to get stuck at this stage.

Resolution

This issue is resolved in NSX-T 2.5.1, available at VMware Downloads .

Workaround:
Remove the login banner from the SFTP backup server.
