Windows without SHA-2 code signing support fails while Installing Workstation

Issue/Introduction

Symptoms:
  • Installing VMware Workstation on Windows without SHA-2 code signing support fails and rollback changes.
  • The Installer throws out a message box regarding to some driver "x" similar to:

    Setup failed to install xxx driver automatically. This driver will have to be installed manually.
     
  • The vminst.log file contains entries similar to:

    BaseDriverManager::DifxApiLogCallback: x: Signature verification failed while checking integrity of driver package 'x.inf'


Environment

VMware Workstation Pro 15.x (Windows)

Cause

This issue occurs because Microsoft has changed the windows driver signing to use SHA-2 algorithm exclusively. Starting September 2019, legacy Windows systems without SHA-2 code signing support will fail the driver signature verification.

Resolution

To resolve this issue, download and install the required Windows Updates KB4474419 and KB4490628 on Windows 7 SP1 and Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1.
