Issue/Introduction

Symptoms:
Logging in to the vSphere Client will log out after a short time with the Firefox browser.

Environment

VMware vSphere ESXi 7.0.0
VMware vSphere ESXi 6.7
VMware vCenter Server 7.0.x
VMware vCenter Server 6.7.x

Cause

The issue is caused when accessing a vCenter Server of Host Client using its IP address. The redirect to the WebSSO login page uses the FQDN (DNS name).

If the vSphere Client was originally accessed with an IP the redirect after authentication is to the IP address, which Firefox regards as cross-domain.

Resolution

Resolve this issue with one of the following:
  • Access the VC/H5C using the PNID of the vCenter Server:
    • Run this command on the vCenter to find the PNID:
 /usr/lib/vmware-vmafd/bin/vmafd-cli get-pnid --server-name localhost
  • Add samesite.cookie.policy=None in /etc/vmware/vsphere-ui/webclient.properties
    • This can be applied for both vSphere 6.7 Update 2 with external PSC and vSphere 7.0 with external OAuth2 or in VMC.
