Issue/Introduction

This article provides information on a new feature in VMware vSphere 7.0 where Guest OS partitions can be associated with the underlying virtual disks.

Environment

VMware vCenter Server 7.0.x
VMware vSphere ESXi 7.0.0

Resolution

As of VMware Tools 11.0 and vSphere 7.0, Guest OS partitions can be associated with the underlying virtual disks. This information is exposed through the vim.vm.GuestInfo.DiskInfo structure. Each Guest OS partition exposes the name and key of the virtual disks backing it.

Note: Not all Guest Operating System configurations are supported in time for this release.

Tested Guest Operating Systems:

Windows:
  • Windows Guest Operating System that supports PVSCSI and LSI SAS controller from Windows 2012 and later.
  • Set disk.EnableUUID = "TRUE" in the .vmx file.
Linux:
  • Linux Guest Operating System that supports Open VM Tools such as RHEL-7+, SLES-12+, Ubuntu-14+, VMware Photon.
  • Supported Controller: IDE/SATA/PVSCSI/LSI SAS/NVME.
