Issue/Introduction

Symptoms:
  • CentOS 7.6.1810 shows up in VMware vSphere as a Guest OS of CentOS 6
  • When you run "vim-cmd vmsvc/get.guest vmid" from ESXi host side to get Guest Information of CentOS 7.6 VM, guestId and guestFullName is reported as CentOS 6, like below:
 
guestId = "centos6_64Guest"
guestFullName = "CentOS 6 (64-bit)",


Cause

Open-VM-Tools bundled in CentOS 7.6.1810 cannot recognize the OS version "7.6.1810" in /etc/centos-release.

Resolution

To resolve this issue follow one of the following steps.
  • Remove open-vm-tools in CentOS 7.6.1810 and install VMware Tools (Version>=10.3.10).
OR,
  • Replace "7.6.1810" with "7.6" in /etc/centos-release.
