Issue/Introduction

Symptoms:
  • VMs running on a vSAN datastore. Storage vMotion is attempted with source and destination set to the same vSAN datastore. 
  • The warning message is displayed only while performing Storage vMotion on the same vSAN storage by selecting  "Change both compute resource and storage" and "Select compute resource first" in Migration Wizard 

  • Compatibility check completes successfully if the "Select storage first" option is selected. 
  • In the Select Network pane of the migration wizard, a warning is displayed under the Compatibility section.
"The operation is not supported on the object. Disk 'XXXX' is not moving, so any transform requests will not be honored."



Environment

VMware vSAN 6.7.x

Cause

This warning is displayed letting you know that no changes will be made from a storage perspective since the VM is not actually changing storage.

Resolution

This warning is expected for this operation as Storage vMotion migration is attempted in place - within the same vSAN datastore.


 


Additional Information

Impact/Risks:
There is no impact to production and the warning can be safely ignored. The migration completes successfully despite the warnings.
