Issue/Introduction

To fix the sound issue in the virtual machine post physical to a virtual machine conversion.

Symptoms:
After performing a physical to a virtual machine, there may be no sound in the virtual machine.

Environment

VMware Workstation Pro 15.x (Windows)
VMware Workstation Pro 14.x (for Windows)

Cause

The physical machine's sound card driver is still present in the Virtual Machine which is not compatible post the conversion.

Resolution

1. Uninstall the existing Sound Card drivers from the Virtual Machine
  • Navigate to Device Management 
  1. Start > Run > devmgmt.msc ( A Device Manager console will appear)
  2. Click on View > Show Hidden Devices
  3. Expand the Sound, Video, Game Controllers
  4. Uninstall any Sound Drivers related to Physical Machine like Realtek, Asus, etc.
2. Clean uninstall VMware tools from the virtual machine. For more information see https://kb.vmware.com/kb/2010137
3. Shutdown the Windows Virtual Machine.
4. Go to Virtual Machine > Settings > Sound Card
5. Remove the Sound Card
6. Click on Add Device > Select the Sound Card > Add > Ok the Settings
7. Power on the virtual machine
8. Install VMware Tools. For more information see https://kb.vmware.com/s/article/1018377
9. When the VMware Tools installation has finished, restart the virtual machine for the changes to take effect.
