Issue/Introduction

This article provides instructions for installing the standalone ESXCLI 6.7 U2 command package for Linux.
This standalone package is provided to avoid known issues when installing the current vSphere CLI package on newer Linux distributions.

Resolution

To install, decompress the provided .tgz file into a directory of your choice (this article describes /opt/vmware), then add the installed esxcli binary to your path (this article describes using a symlink).
Note: The platform supported by the standalone ESXCLI 6.7 U2 command package for Linux is Ubuntu 18.04, and is applicable to vSphere ESXi 6.7 U2. Download Link: VMware ESX Command Line Interface 6.7U2
  1. Extract the .tgz file into the directory of your choice:
su # Install as root for all users
mkdir /opt/vmware
tar
zxf esxcli-6.7.0-NNNNNNNN-lin64.tgz -C /opt/vmware
  1. Add the installed esxcli binary to the path:
ln -s /opt/vmware/esxcli/esxcli /usr/bin/esxcli
  1. Run the command to confirm successful installation:
esxcli --version

Note: Installing as root is not required. ESXCLI can be installed in a per-user location as well.
Installing both vSphere CLI and Standalone ESXCLI on the same system is not recommended.
