Symptoms: After upgrading VMware Tools, you experience this symptom:
The previously disabled VMXNET3 vNIC is enabled.
Cause
This issue occurs as the disabled VMXNET3 device is enabled by Windows SetupAPI function UpdateDriverForPlugAndPlayDevices() when the function is called to perform device driver upgrade. Similarly, disabled PVSCSI device will be enabled when its device driver is upgraded.
Resolution
This is a known issue affecting VMware Tools 10.3.5 and older versions.
Currently, there is no resolution.
Workaround: To work around this issue, remove the disabled virtual device from the VM configuration before upgrading VMware Tools.
