Issue/Introduction

Symptoms:
The Guest Operating system may lose IP address information after applying Microsoft patches KB4088875 and KB 4088878.

Note: These Microsoft Knowledge Base articles are from March 2018.

Cause

This issue occurs when there is more than one Network Adapter in the Windows registry. Before the patch is applied, there may be an Adapter #1 in use and visible, after the patch is applied, Adapter #1 is hidden and Adapter #2 takes over (which may have a completely different IP config) causing the symptom of a lost IP address.

Resolution

This is not a VMware issue.

Microsoft has determined that this is a Windows-specific issue and unrelated to VMware or vSphere. Microsoft is encouraging customers to follow the directions provided in Microsoft article NIC settings are replaced or static IP address settings are lost after you install KB4088875 or KB4088878 for the recommended resolution.

All further updates will be provided directly by Microsoft through the referenced KB.
