Issue/Introduction

Symptoms:
  • VM under DFW loses network connectivity after vMotion to another host in NSX cluster if the source host dvfilter version is higher than the destination host dvfilter version.

Environment

VMware NSX for vSphere 6.3.x
VMware NSX for vSphere 6.2.x

Cause

In the NSX upgrade process, it is not supported to migrate a VM from the upgraded host to the non-upgraded host of which the dvfilter version is older than the source host when DFW is enabled.

Resolution

If DFW is enabled in NSX environment:
  • Migrating a VM from the non-upgraded host to the upgraded host is supported.
  • Migrating a VM from the upgraded host to the non-upgraded host of which dvfilter version is same as the source is supported.
  • Migrating a VM from the host installed with NSX 6.4.x to the host installed with NSX 6.3.x or NSX 6.2.x is not supported.
  • Migrating a VM from the host installed with NSX 6.3.x to the host installed with NSX 6.2.x is not supported.
  • Migrating a VM from the host installed with more than NSX 6.2.4 to the host installed with NSX 6.2.2 or earlier is not supported.

Notes: dvfilter version 3: NSX for vSphere 6.2.2 and earlier
dvfilter version 4: NSX for vSphere 6.2.3 and later.
dvfilter version 5: NSX for vSphere 6.3.0 and later.
dvfilter version 6: NSX for vSphere 6.4.0 and later.

To work around this issue:

  • Ensure that all the hosts in the cluster are upgraded in the same window.
  • Change the DRS to manual mode till all hosts upgrade.
