Issue/Introduction

Symptoms:
  • HotAdd mode throws error while using for backup.
  • VDDK log files contains entries similar to:

    Log: 2017-06-02T16:19:41.687+02:00 verbose -[07248] [Originator@6876 sub=transport] Failed to scan SCSI bus 0, error 259
    Log: 2017-06-02T16:19:41.702+02:00 error -[07248] [Originator@6876 sub=transport] HotAdd ManagerLoop caught an exception
    Log: 2017-05-26T12:32:12.355+02:00 error -[07148] [Originator@6876 sub=transport] Cannot use mode hotadd to access [DS-R10-1] GSPDC1/GSPDC1.vmdk: Cannot mount using this method. (Mounting VM vm-64 using transport hotadd failed : HotAdd ManagerLoop caught an exception.)
    Log: VixDiskLib: Unable to locate appropriate transport mode to open disk. Error 13 (You do not have access rights to this file) (Mounting VM vm-64 using transport hotadd failed : HotAdd ManagerLoop caught an exception.) at 4843.

Environment

Virtual Disk Development Kit 6.0
Virtual Disk Development Kit 6.7
Virtual Disk Development Kit 6.5

Cause

VDDK assumes that there is a AHCI controller.
 
This issue occurs when rescanning for new disks on the AHCI controller fails.

Resolution

This is a known issue affecting VMware Virtual Disk Development Kit 6.0, 6.5, and 6.7.
 
To work around this issue, remove SATA controller from proxy virtual machine while using HotAdd mode.
