Issue/Introduction

This article answers inquiries about the Wannacry/Petya ransomware attacks as they relate to VMware software.

Resolution

The VMware Security Engineering, Communications, and Response group (vSECR) has reviewed the publications and intelligence that has been gathered on these ransomware attacks and has determined VMware software is not being targeted by this ransomware. VMware products could be compromised if they are configured to trust a 3rd party authentication and authorization system such as Microsoft Active Directory Domain Services which has been compromised, or if they run on an operating system that has been compromised.

VMware recommends that concerned customers review the information provided by Microsoft on these issues and follow the recommendations provided.
