Resolution

This is a known issue affecting ESXi 6.5.

This issue is resolved in VMware ESXi 6.5, Patch Release ESXi650-201703001. For more information, see VMware ESXi 6.5, Patch Release ESXi650-201703001 (2148989).

If you are unable to upgrade you can workaround the issue, perform the steps:
  1. Create RDM disk from command line using the vmkfstools command. For more information, see Creating Raw Device Maps from the command line using the vmkfstools command (2046370).
  2. Use the host client to attach RDM disk to virtual machine using the Existing hard disk:
    1. Right-click a virtual machine in the inventory and select Edit Settings.
    2. On the Virtual Hardware tab, select Existing Hard Disk from the New device drop-down menu and click Add.
    3. In the Datastores column, expand the datastore.
    4. Select a virtual machine folder and select the disk to add. The disk file appears in the Contents column. The File Type drop-down menu shows the compatibility file types for this disk.
    5. Click OK.
