Issue/Introduction

This article provides information on the kernels supported for Oracle Linux.
Oracle corporation distributes Oracle Linux with two types of kernels:
  • Red Hat Compatible Kernel (RHCK)
  • Unbreakable Enterprise Kernel (UEK)


Resolution

In collaboration with Oracle, VMware supports virtualization of Oracle Linux with both the Red Hat Compatible Kernel (RHCK) and the Unbreakable Enterprise Kernel (UEK) in these conditions:
  1. The Oracle Linux release is published as a supported guest OS by the VMware product release in the VMware Compatibility Guide.
  2. Oracle supports the particular combination of kernel version and Oracle Linux release. This includes kernels shipped with Oracle Linux releases and maintenance errata kernels published by Oracle for that Oracle Linux release.

  3. Unbreakable Enterprise Kernel (UEK) 2 (2.6.39) or later.

  4. The configuration of Oracle Linux follows all Oracle and VMware recommendations.
