Issue/Introduction

Symptoms:
  • HP Gen 8/9 servers might fail to boot from an SD card.
  • ESXi host stops responding or runs in a stateless condition after losing access to device backing boot filesystem:

Lost connectivity to the device mpx.vmhba32:C0:T0:L0 backing the boot filesystem /vmfs/devices/disks/mpx.vmhba:32:C0:T0:L0. As a result, host configuration changes will not be saved to persistent storage.

Environment

VMware vSphere ESXi 5.5
VMware vSphere ESXi 6.0

Cause

This is known issue with HP ILO firmware version 2.22 and 2.30. On an HPE ProLiant server running VMware ESXi and utilizing an HP Dual 8GB microSD Enterprise Midline USB Kit, the HPE microSD card carrier solution may experience memory corruption, which may lead to an all paths down situation.

Resolution

To resolve this issue, replace a hardware. For more information, see Hewlett Packard Enterprise Support Center.
