Installing NSX Guest Introspection services (MUX VIB) on the ESXi host fails in VMware NSX for vSphere 6.x

Issue/Introduction

Symptoms:
  • NSX Manager reports that installing Guest Introspection fails for each cluster
  • You see the error:

    Agent VIB Module is not installed

  • In the /var/log/hostd.log file on the ESXi host, you seen entries similar to:

    Tasks: Enable Agent. Error: Cannot complete the operation, see event log for details
    Events: VIB module for agent is not installed on host <ESXi_Hostname> (_VCNS_Guest Introspection)

  • In the /var/log/vmware/eam/eam.log file or the C:\ProgramData\VMware\vCenterServer\logs\eam\eam.log file for the ESX Agent Manager (EAM), you see entries similar to:

    Note: The preceding log excerpts are only examples. Date, time, and environmental variables may vary depending on your environment.


Environment

VMware NSX for vSphere 6.1.x
VMware NSX for vSphere 6.2.x

Cause

This issue occurs because the vSphere Update Manager (VUM) on https://localhost:8084/vci/sdk is unreachable.

By design, if VUM is registered with vCenter Server and is not accessible, ESX Agent Manager (EAM) fails to proceed with installing the VIBs.

Resolution

To resolve this issue, follow the steps in the resolution section of the Knowledge Base article Installing VXLAN Agent fails with ESX Agent Manager displaying the error: Agent VIB module not installed (2053782).
