Issue/Introduction

Symptoms:
When ESXi is running as a virtual machine on some other third-party hypervisor, you experience these symptoms:
  • Attempting to install a virtual machine inside an ESXi virtual machine fails.
  • You see the error:

    You are running VMware ESX through an incompatible hypervisor. You cannot power on a virtual machine until this hypervisor is disabled.


Environment

VMware vSphere ESXi 5.5
VMware vSphere ESXi 5.1
VMware vSphere ESXi 5.0

Cause

VMware does not support ESXi running in other third-party hypervisor solutions. For more information, see Support for running ESXi/ESX as a nested virtualization solution (2009916).

This issue occurs if you try to install virtual machines inside ESXi that is running as a guest hypervisor inside other third-party hypervisor.


Resolution

If you want to continue installing or running a virtual machine inside ESXi that is running as a guest in other third-party hypervisor, perform these steps:
  1. Open the nested virtual machine's configuration file using a text editor.
  2. Add this line to the virtual machine's configuration file:

    vmx.allowNested = TRUE
  3. Save and close the file.
