Issue/Introduction

This article outlines the requirements in order to perform vMotion Across Long Distances in VMware vSphere 6.0.

Environment

VMware vCenter Server 6.0.x

Resolution

VMware vSphere 6.0 adds functionality to migrate virtual machines over long distances. You can now perform reliable migrations between hosts and sites that are separated by high network round-trip latency times. vMotion across long distances is enabled when correctly configured and the appropriate license is installed. No further user configuration is required.

Further to the normal vMotion requirements detailed in the Host Configuration for vMotion section in the vCenter Server Host Management guide, there are some further requirements to use long distance vMotion.

Your environment must comply with these requirements:
  • A RTT (round-trip time) latency of 150 milliseconds or less, between hosts.
  • Your license must cover vMotion across long distances. The cross vCenter and long distance vMotion features require an Enterprise Plus license. For more information, see Compare vSphere Editions.
  • VMware recommends to place the traffic related to virtual machine files transfer to the destination host on the provisioning TCP/IP stack for traffic isolation benefits. For more information, see the Place Traffic for Cold Migration, Cloning, and Snapshots on the Provisioning TCP/IP Stack section in the vCenter Server Host Management guide.
