Issue/Introduction

Symptoms:
  • ESXi 5.x host fails with a purple diagnostic screen.
  • ESXi host is running virtual machines using an E1000 or E1000e virtual network adapter.
  • The purple diagnostic screen contains entries similar to:

    @BlueScreen: #PF Exception 14 in world wwww:WorldName IP 0xnnnnnnnn addr 0x0
    PTEs:0xnnnnnnnn;0xnnnnnnnn;0x0;
    0xnnnnnnnn:[0xnnnnnnnn]E1000MapGuestPACommon@vmkernel#nover+ 0x3c8


Cause

This issue occurs due to inconsistent values in function E1000MapGuestPACommon () which in turn causing infinite loop and stack overflow.

Resolution

This is a known issue affecting VMware ESXi 5.1 Build 1065491.

Currently, there is no resolution.

To work around the issue, use the VMXNET3 virtual adapter and reduce the usage of the E1000 series adapter.
