Issue/Introduction

This article provides the steps to disable the Datastore Browser feature on vCenter Server.

Symptoms:
vCenter Server contains the Datastore Browser feature that allows a user to browse all datastores associated with the vSphere environment. This includes all folders and files contained within the datastores.
 
Permissions to Datastore Browser are governed by vCenter Server permissions. In some cases, you want to disable access to Datastore Browser for security purposes or to eliminate the risk of a user being able to access the core virtual machine files and folders contained on the datastores.


Environment

VMware vCenter Server 5.1.x
VMware vCenter Server 5.0.x
VMware vCenter Server 5.5.x

Resolution

To disable the Datastore Browser feature in vCenter Server:

  1. Stop the VirtualCenter Server service. For more information see, Stopping, starting, or restarting VMware vCenter Server services (1003895).
  2. Take a backup of the C:\ProgramData\VMware\VMware VirtualCenter\vpxd.cfg file.

    For vCenter Server Appliance - /etc/vmware-vpx/vpxd.cfg file.
     
  3. Open the vpxd.cfg file using a text editor.
  4. Locate the <vpxd> and </vpxd> tags and add the following entry in tags.

    ...
    <vpxd>
         <enableHttpDatastoreAccess>false</enableHttpDatastoreAccess>
    </vpxd>
    ...
     
  5. Save the changes to the vpxd.cfg file.
  6. Start the VirtualCenter Server service. For more information see, Stopping, starting, or restarting VMware vCenter Server services (1003895).
  7. You will no longer be able to browse or view datastores within vCenter Server using a web browser.

    Note: The Datastore Browser will still be accessible when accessing an ESXi host directly.
