Issue/Introduction

Symptoms:
When Windows 7 64-bit or Windows 8 64-bit is configured for vDGA using a Nvidia Quadro K4200, Nvidia Quadro K2200, Nvidia Quadro K6000, or Nvidia Grid K2 graphics processing unit:
  • Virtual machine fails with blue diagnostic screen.
  • Windows guest operating system fails with a blue diagnostic screen.
  • VMware ESXi fails with a purple diagnostic screen after the virtual machine fails.

Environment

VMware vSphere ESXi 6.0
VMware vSphere ESXi 5.5

Resolution

This is a known issue affecting VMware ESXi 5.5 and 6.0.

Currently, there is no resolution.

To work around this issue, change the virtual machine's .vmx file setting pciPassthru0.msiEnabled from true to false.

To change the virtual machine's vmx file setting pciPassthru0.msiEnabled from true to false:

Note: Make a copy of a file before editing it, and the virtual machine should not be running while trying to edit one of its components.

  1. Open an SSH session to the ESXi host running the virtual machine. For more information, see Using ESXi Shell in ESXi 5.x and 6.x (2004746).

  2. Navigate to the location of the virtual machine:

    cd /vmfs/volumes/virtual_machine_datastore/virtual_machine_folder/

  3. Open the .vmx file of the virtual machine in a text editor.

    vi virtual_machine.vmx

  4. Edit the pciPassthru0.msiEnabled and change the option to false. For more information, see Editing files on an ESX host using vi or nano (1020302).

  5. Save the changes and exit the file.

  6. Reload the vmx file to apply the changes. For details, see Reloading a vmx file without removing the virtual machine from inventory (1026043).
