Issue/Introduction
This article provides information about the supported host operating systems for vCenter Server installation.
Note: VMware does not support in-place upgrade of the OS where a VMware component/application is installed.

This table lists the supported host operating systems for vCenter Server installation.
Important:
In vSphere 7.0, deploying or upgrading vCenter Server in vSphere 7.0 requires the use of vCenter Server appliance, a pre-configured Linux virtual machine optimized for running vCenter Server. The new vCenter Server contains all Platform Services Controller (PSC) services, preserving the functionality and workflows, including authentication, certificate management, and licensing. It is no longer necessary nor possible to deploy and use an external Platform Services Controller. All PSC services have been consolidated into vCenter Server, and deployment and administration have been simplified.
Important:
Removal of vCenter Server for Windows Support
In vSphere 7.0, vCenter Server for Windows has been removed and support is not available. For more information, see Farewell, vCenter Server for Windows .
Removal of External Platform Services Controller
In vSphere 7.0, deploying or upgrading vCenter Server in vSphere 7.0 requires the use of vCenter Server appliance, a pre-configured Linux virtual machine optimized for running vCenter Server. Note: Core versions of Windows Server are not supported for installation of vCenter Server.
