Note: For ESX 4.1 hosts, the build number changes if the vmware-esx-apps RPM is updated. As this patch updates only the bash RPM, the build number of the ESX 4.1 hosts does not change.

Patch Download and Installation

Download the patch ZIP file from http://support.vmware.com/selfsupport/download/ and install the bulletin using esxupdate from the command line of the host. For more information, see the ESX 4.1 Patch Management Guide. This patch can also be downloaded through online portal using vSphere update manager and patch it on the host.

Note: For detailed information on how to use the build number, see Determining detailed build number information for VMware hosts (1012514).

To determine if the patch is applied successfully and the bash rpm is the latest

  1. Log in to the ESX service console and check the esxupdate query output. Bash bulletin should be listed as:
    [root@localhost ~]# esxupdate query | grep -i bash
    ESX410-201410401-SG 2014-09-29T23:31:53 Updates bash


  2. Check that the latest bash vib is in the installed state using esxupdate query. It should be listed as:
    [root@localhost ~]# esxupdate query --v | grep -i bash
    rpm_bash_3.2-33.el5_10.4@x86_64 installed 2014-09-29T23:31:45.351974+05:30
    [root@localhost ~]#
    [root@localhost ~]#

Note: As the REBOOT tag is on, reboot the host after applying the patch.
