Issue/Introduction

Symptoms:
Emulex OneConnect network cards missing on ESXi 5.5 after upgrading the elxnet driver from 10.0.575.7 to 10.0.725.2 and later version.

Environment

VMware vSphere ESXi 6.7
VMware vSphere ESXi 5.5

Cause

This issue has been identified as a regression in the current driver that is specific to BE2 and multichannel. The issue results from the driver requesting 8 Rx queues in a multichannel environment with BE2.

Resolution

This issue is resolved in elxnet driver version 10.2.241.0 and later.

Note: If you are already using an upgraded async driver and you previously applied the workaround to disable the NetQueue/MSIX functionality, this change must be reverted, prior to or shortly after upgrading the driver. To enable these options again run this command:

esxcfg-module -s "" elxnet

Alternatively, work around this issue using any one of these options if you cannot upgrade the elxnet driver to 10.2.241.0 or later versions:
  • Remain on the inbox elxnet driver which comes with ESXi 5.5, version 10.0.575.7.
  • Install an updated driver but disable the NetQueue/MSIX functionality which allows all 8 network cards to be detected. Run this command to disable NetQueue/MSIX functionality

    esxcfg-module -s "msix=0" elxnet

    Note: If you apply this workaround, the change must be reverted before you upgrade the driver to the fixed release (10.2.241.0 and later).


Additional Information

Note: This is a driver issue, upgrading NIC firmware will not alleviate the issue, although it may be required in a driver upgrade otherwise.
