ESXi host does not synchronize time with NTP server

Issue/Introduction
Symptoms:
- The network time protocol daemon (ntpd) on an ESXi host does not synchronize time with the NTP server.
- Ntpd service is running and synchronized to time sources, but stops responding and waits for the timer to expire.
Environment
VMware vSphere ESXi 5.0

Resolution
This issue is resolved in:
- VMware ESXi 5.5 Update 1, available at VMware Downloads. For more information, see the VMware ESXi 5.5 Update 1 Release Notes.
- VMware ESXi 5.1 Patch 4 ( ESXi510-201404001.zip), available at VMware Downloads. For more information, see VMware ESXi 5.1, Patch Release ESXi510-201404001 (2070666).

To work around this issue if you do not want to upgrade, restart the ntpd manually by running the command:
# /etc/init.d/ntpd restart
