Issue/Introduction

Symptoms:

  • Cannot perform a vMotion using the vSphere Web Client

  • Performing a vMotion of a virtual machine using the vSphere Web Client of fails

  • You see the error:

The "Migrate Virtual Machine" operation failed for the entity with the following error message.
Permission to perform this operation was denied.
You do not hold privilege "Resource > Migrate powered OFF virtual machine" on virtual machine


Environment

VMware vCenter Server 5.1.x
VMware vCenter Server 5.5.x

Cause

This issue occurs if the user does not have the correct permissions. To perform a vMotion of a virtual machine using the vSphere Web Client, the user must requires the Migrate powered OFF virtual machine permission.

The vSphere Client uses the vim.VirtualMachine.migrate to vMotion a virtual machine. However, the vSphere Web Client uses vim.VirtualMachine.relocate to vMotion, Storage vMotion, XvMotion, and Cold Migrate a virtual machine and the user requires the Migrate powered OFF virtual machine permission.

Resolution

To resolve this issue, you must add the Migrate powered OFF virtual machine permission to the user.

To add this permission from the vSphere Web Client:
  1. Navigate to Administration > Role Manager.
  2. Select a vCenter Server system from the dropdown.
  3. Select a role and click Edit role action.
  4. Add the Migrate powered OFF virtual machine permission located under Resources to the role.
