Issue/Introduction

Symptoms:
  • Quiesced snapshots fail on a virtual machine running Windows Server 2012 with Microsoft Exchange 2013.
  • In vSphere Client, you see an error similar to:

    An error occurred while saving the snapshot: msg.snapshot.error-QUIESCING-ERROR

  • This issue occurs when Microsoft Windows Server Backup Features are not installed on the affected virtual machine.
  • The vmware.log file (located at: /vmfs/volume/Datastore/Affected_Virtual_Machine/) contains errors similar to:

Environment

VMware vSphere ESXi 5.5

Cause

This issue occurs because the Volume Shadow Copy Service (VSS) fails in Windows when Windows Server Backup Features are not installed.

Resolution

To resolve this issue, add the Server Backup Features to Windows.

To add the Server Backup Features to Windows, perform one of these options:

Or

  • Add the feature using Server Manager:
    1. Click Start > Server Manager.
    2. In the upper right-hand corner, click Manage > click Add Roles and Features.
    3. In the list of features in the Features section double-click Windows Server Backup
    4. If Windows PowerShell is not installed, double-click Windows PowerShell.
    5. Click Next.
    6. Click Install on the Confirmation Installation Selections screen.
    7. Click Close.
