Issue/Introduction

Symptoms:
  • A host or multiple hosts disconnect from vCenter Server frequently at random intervals.
  • Hosts can disconnect once a day and often reconnect automatically.
  • The vpxd.log file (located at C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\VMware\VirtualCenter\logs) contains entries similar to:

Cause

This issue can occur because of a timeout on the host during an SSL Certificate handshake process.

Resolution

To resolve this issue, perform one of these options: Alternatively you can apply one of these solutions directly on the Windows vCenter Server:
  • For vCenter Server on Windows 2008:
    1. Click Start > Run, type gpedit.msc, and click OK.
    2. In the left pane,Click Computer Configuration under Local Computer Policy.
    3. In the right pane, double-click these folders, Administrative Templates > System > Internet Communication Management > Internet Communication Settings.
    4. Right-click Turn off Automatic Root Certificates Update and click Edit.
    5. Select Enabled and click OK.

  • For vCenter Server on Windows 2003:
Turn off the Automatic Root Certificates Update on Windows Server by deselecting Update Root Certificates in Add or Remove Programs. For more information, see the Resolution section of Hosts randomly disconnect from vCenter server after being reconnected (2020620).

Additional Information

For information on how to turn off the Automatic Root Certificates Update on Windows Server 2008, see the Microsoft article, Automatic Root Certificates Update Configuration.
