Issue/Introduction

Symptoms:
  • When Receive Side Scaling (RSS) is enabled on a Windows virtual machine, you see NetPort messages for repeating MAC addresses indicating that ports are being disabled and then re-enabled.
  • In the vmkernel log, you see messages similar to:

Resolution

This is a known issue affecting the VMXNET3 virtual network driver and occurs because the resetNeeded flag is not set properly.

This issue is resolved in ESXi 5.1 Update 2. For more information, see VMware ESXi 5.1 Update 2 Release Notes and ESXi 5.0 Patch 12 VMware ESXi 5.0, Patch Release ESXi500-201401001 (2065814).

This issue is also resolved in ESXi 5.5 Update 1. For more information, see VMware ESXi 5.5 Update 1 Release Notes.

To work around this issue, disable RSS within the Windows virtual machine.
