Issue/Introduction

Symptoms:
  • After successfully installing an ESXi 5.x host, the host fails to reboot.
  • You see the error:

BANK5: not a VMware boot bank
BANK6: not a VMware boot bank
    No hypervisor found.

Environment

VMware vSphere ESXi 5.1
VMware vSphere ESXi 5.5
VMware vSphere ESXi 5.0

Cause

This issue occurs due to a prior partition table present in the local datastore.

Resolution

To resolve this issue, use a Live Linux CD of your choice. Relabel the local datastore and create a partition table with one partition. Then re-install ESXi.
For more information on creating the partition table using a Live Linux CD, see Using GNU Parted from the GNU Parted User Manual.
