Issue/Introduction

This article provides information on configuring the host FQDN to properly show in the vSphere Client.

Symptoms:
When a direct connection is made to the VMware ESX host through the VMware Infrastructure/vSphere client, the hostname appears as localhost.localdomain.

Environment

VMware ESX Server 3.5.x

Cause

The name resolution parameters were not properly configured during the installation of the ESX host.

Resolution

To resolve this issue, you must verify that the FQDN is correct in the files listed below. If the FQDN is not correct, edit the files in a text editor such as nano or VI. For information regarding editing files on an ESX host using vi or nano, see Editing files on an ESX host using vi or nano (1020302).

/etc/sysconfig/network
  • H0STNAME= [FQDN of ESX host]
/etc/vmware/esx.conf:
  • /adv/Misc/HostName = [FQDN of ESX host]
/etc/hosts:
  • Syntax for /etc/hosts = [IP address of host] [fully qualified domain name of host] [shortname of host]

    For example, 192.168.1.65 esxhost.domain.com esxhost
Note: A reboot is required to reflect changes in the vSphere Client.
