Issue/Introduction

The esx.problem.scsi.device.is.ssd.failed message is received when an ESXi host fails to identify a storage device as a Solid State Disk (SSD). Typically, this happens when your storage array does not support an automatic SSD device detection provided by ESXi.

Impact

If the ESXi host does not automatically identify a device as SSD, the device cannot be used to allocate space for host cache.

Environment

VMware vSphere ESXi 5.1
VMware vSphere ESXi 5.5
VMware vSphere ESXi 5.0

Resolution

You can use PSA SATP claim rules to tag SSD devices that are not detected automatically. For information on how to tag devices as SSD, see the Tag Devices as SSD topic in the vSphere Storage documentaiton.
