Issue/Introduction

Symptoms:
  • You cannot connect to the vRealize Operations (formerly known as vCenter Operations) appliance.
  • You see one of these errors (depending on browser):
    • Connection reset
    • Unreachable
    • Page not found
  • After the vRealize Operations (formerly known as vCenter Operations) applicance is connected to vCenter Server, the vCenter Client shows that the plugin is disabled to a connection error.
  • You see the error:

The following error occured while downloading the script plugin from https://vrealize_operations_server/viClientConfig.xml

  • A network dump shows that the TCP handshake succeeds, but the appliance resets the connection after the first HTTPS packet.

Environment

VMware vCenter Operations Standard 1.0.x
VMware vCenter Operations Enterprise 1.0.x

Resolution

This problem occurs when the appliance is configured using default SUSE security settings. These settings include a line in /etc/hosts.allow that reads ALL : KNOWN. This line dictates that the client IP must be reverse-resolvable to a name and then back from the name to the same IP. If your environment does not have reverse DNS that matches exactly with direct DNS, the check can fail, and the server closes the connection.

To resolve this issue, use the console to connect to the command line (login as the root user or another administrator), and change the line in /etc/hosts.allow to ALL : ALL.

Note: You must use vi to perform these edits. For more information, see Editing files on an ESX host using vi or nano (1020302).
