Issue/Introduction

Symptoms:
  • The Vstor2 UFA Virtual Storage Driver service fails to start
  • The Windows virtual machine fails to boot after a P2V conversion.
  • You see the error:

    service failed to start
  • In the Event logs, you see the error:

    Event ID: 7000
    Event Source: Service Control Manager
    Description: The Vstor2 UFA Virtual Storage Driver service failed to start due to the following error : The system cannot find the file specified.


Environment

VMware vCenter Converter Standalone 4.0.x
VMware vCenter Converter 4.0.x
VMware Converter 3.0.x
VMware vCenter Converter 4.1.x

Cause

This issue is occurs if the automatic cleanup of Converter Agent files from the system on which it ran is incomplete.

After a successful or failed attempt to import, if the vmware-ufad-p2v-XXXXX subdirectories within the %SystemRoot% directory on the remote source physical machine are not automatically cleaned, future import attempts fail.

Resolution

To resolve this issue, manually remove the related keys from the registry and delete the vmware-ufad-p2v-XXXXX subdirectories within %SystemRoot%\system32.
To perform the manual clean-up:
  1. Click Start > Run, type regedit, and click OK. The Registry Editor window opens.
  2. Navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services.
  3. Delete the stcp2v30 key.
  4. Delete the vstor2-p2v30 key.
  5. Delete all vmware-ufad-p2v-XXXXX keys.
  6. Delete all courier-XXXXX keys.
  7. Reboot.
  8. Under the %SystemRoot%\system32 folder, remove all vmware-ufad-p2v-XXXXX subdirectories.

Note: If you do a search on windows registry, you may still find vmware-ufad keys in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet00x. You can ignore this because, after the next reboot, the registry hive in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet is saved as ControlSetx.
